This series prepares participants with the basics, including an explanation of nonprofit financial systems, and a crash course in reading financial statements. Participants are then introduced to key management tools that allow leaders to plan proactively as they support their communities amid funding uncertainty.

Explore the fundamentals of nonprofit finance, equipping leaders and managers to assess their organizations’ financial position through interpreting income statements, balance sheets, and other financial statements.
3. Budgeting as a Communications Tool
Prepare a budget that appropriately communicates your organization’s financial needs, and concludes with more advanced budgeting concepts such as covering full costs and balance sheet items.

Building on content from Nonprofit Finance Fundamentals Part 1, participants will learn how common business choices can be managed across leadership roles to inform program success and help you best advance your mission.
1. Beyond Compliance: Strategic Financial Management
Look beyond finance for compliance’s sake, and see how it should be integrated into organizational decision-making across all management facets including governance, fundraising, and strategic planning.
2. Planning for Effective Capitalization
This webinar addresses the basics of capitalization and distinctions between the types of resources (“build” money vs. “buy” money) that can help organizations achieve their goals.
3. Cash Flow: What You Need to Know
Translate your budget into a clear, visual landscape of monthly cash in/cash out. Learn best practices and missteps in cash flow planning, how to identify low-cash months, and how cash-flow management connects to accessing credit.
4. Growth, Earned Income Ventures, and Endowments
To lead through adaptation, nonprofit leaders must realistically assess new business opportunities, such as growth and scaling, launching an earned income venture or social enterprise, or building an endowment.
5. Facility Projects: Planning for Success
Learn to assess your organization’s readiness to execute a well-planned facility project, including often-overlooked soft costs and cash flow.

Healthy Outcomes Learning Network July Convening (Recorded July 11, 2017)
The Healthy Outcomes Learning Network convening in July explored Navigating Partnership: Demonstrating Value with a panel discussion featuring Jewish Family Services of LA, a multiservice agency working to strengthen and preserve individual, family, and community life.
Despite growing uncertainty in the health landscape across the country, we are seeing greater emphasis on outcomes. As community-based organizations (CBOs) pursue collaboration with health partners, what investments in infrastructure need to be made to support quality data collection? To understand and articulate improved health and reduced costs? And does culture and mission alignment play a role in successfully demonstrating outcomes?
Guest speakers Paul Castro, President and CEO, and Todd Sosna, Senior VP of Operations, shared Jewish Family Services of LA's experience collaborating with health partners to provide complementary social services to communities in need. Key themes discussed were:

Healthy Outcomes Learning Network March Convening (Recorded March 9, 2017)
The Healthy Outcomes Learning Network convened in March 2017 for a one-hour discussion on Navigating Partnership: Assessing Fit and Organizational Alignment. Well-managed partnerships provide mutual benefits to participating stakeholders and the clients they serve, but what's involved when choosing a partner, what are the common challenges, and how will infrastructure support these new partnerships?
A panel discussion featured partners from Project Nightingale, a medical respite care program for homeless adults who are discharged from the hospital in Sonoma County. The program's goals include improved patient outcomes, reduced hospital admissions, and reduced long-term costs to the healthcare system.
Speakers shared their on-the-ground learnings and discuss several key themes for successful collaboration, including:

Financial Health and Social Good: Steering Nonprofits through Uncharted Waters
NFF recorded two webinars to help assess nonprofit organizations’ financial health, risk tolerance, and overall adaptability amidst uncertainty about policy and funding under the new administration.
The first webinar explores concrete steps that nonprofit leaders and board members can take to ensure clear decision-making, such as: how to foster constructive discussion; gauge their organization’s financial health, adaptability, and risk tolerance; assess risks and opportunities; develop scenarios and corresponding action plans; and take short-term actions that don’t endanger long-term stability.
The second webinar covers how funders can support adaptability in their grantees, the role of managing risk in grantee organizations and in funding, and the critical need for funders to recognize the funder-grantee power dynamic and nurture open dialogue.

Managing Through Uncertainty: Workshops for New York Nonprofit Leaders
This fall, NFF is offering free workshops to help New York City nonprofit leaders manage their finances and advance their missions in the context of today's funding and policy uncertainties.
You will examine your organization's financial health and readiness, develop scenarios and corresponding action plans, determine how debt can help with financial management, gain an understanding of full costs and how to articulate those needs to funders and stakeholders, and learn from your peers.
Workshops are scheduled in each of the five boroughs.
