Ascend Schools: Expanding Access to Education
The mission of Ascend schools is to place students firmly on the path to success in college and beyond through a rich and varied liberal arts, college-preparatory curriculum. Over the course of 2015, NFF led a $7.2 million financing project to support the refurbishment and expansion of Ascend charter schools at three campuses in Brooklyn, with another financing project being planned in 2016. The three leasehold improvement loans that were finalized in 2015 will allow Ascend to accommodate over 1,000 additional students from disadvantaged backgrounds at Central Brooklyn Ascend Charter School, Bushwick Ascend Middle School, and Canarsie Ascend Lower School. Students will enjoy a science lab, a counseling space, and beautiful new classrooms.
NFF's lending represents a longstanding partnership with Ascend that began in 2010 to help redevelop 86,000 square feet of space and continued in 2011 to fund site improvements to their school in Bushwick. "NFF understands our financial and school design imperatives and worked diligently with us to create tailored loans for construction work at our new facilities," said Susan Pollock, Chief Real Estate and Planning Officer for the Ascend Learning network of charter schools. "Through our deeply collaborative relationship with NFF we are able to expand opportunities for students in central Brooklyn so they receive an extraordinary education."
